Frequently asked questions

What does the App do?

It is your dive logbook. Log each dive with its site, conditions, equipment, photographs and the species you saw, keep your certification cards in the Credential Wallet, and look back through highlights and milestones. Explore shows dive sites and what divers see there.

Does the App work offline?

Yes. Your dive records, the species catalogue and your profile are stored on your device, and changes synchronise when a connection is available. Explore and the maps require a connection.

What does community data sharing use?

Only information from dives at verified sites: species observed, conditions and exposure equipment, combined with other users' dives and never attributed to you. It produces the figures on Explore, such as what divers see at a site and when. Notes, photographs, buddies and medical details are never used. This can be disabled in Settings › Privacy.

What is free?

Explore, the species index, Marine Safari, What's That Fish and the packing checklist are free. Logging dives and keeping them backed up requires a plan. Prices are shown in the App before purchase and on our pricing section.

What is the difference between Basic and Premium?

Basic keeps your logbook going: your first 15 dives at any pace, then 5 a month, with your dives and photographs backed up. Premium adds unlimited logging, more photographs per dive, the dive tools, statistics, unlimited highlights and printable dive pages.

What is a Boost?

A one-off purchase of everything in Premium for 30 days, made for a trip. It does not renew. Each further Boost adds 30 days. When it ends you return to your plan, and everything you logged is kept. If you chose to continue on Basic afterwards, that is a separate subscription which may be cancelled in the store.

How does scanning work?

Photograph a logbook page and the App reads it into a dive for you to check before saving; fields that cannot be read are left blank. Otterseas journal pages are included with Basic and Premium. Other logbooks use scan credits, which come with a Boost or a Scan Pack. Certification cards can be scanned into the Credential Wallet. Page photographs are not kept once the dive is saved. If a page type repeatedly fails, please email us a photograph of it.

How do I export my dives?

Go to Settings › Data & storage › Export dive logs to save every dive as a CSV or JSON file, or as printable PDF pages. Highlight cards and videos are saved or shared from the highlight itself.

How do I redeem a code from an Otterseas journal or dive professional?

Follow the QR code or link provided with the code and sign in with your Dive Journal account. The plan will be applied to that account.

How do I transfer my dives to a new device?

Sign in with the same email address on the new device. Your dives will be restored at the next synchronisation. If you hold a paid plan, select Restore purchases within the App.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by the store through which they were purchased. iPhone: Settings › your name › Subscriptions › The Dive Journal. Android: Google Play › your profile › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions. Deleting the App or your account does not cancel a subscription. Access continues until the end of the current paid period.

How do I request a refund?

Payments are processed by Apple or Google, and refund requests are handled by them: reportaproblem.apple.com for iPhone, or Google Play refunds for Android.

Can the dive tools be relied upon?

No. The dive tools are planning aids for cross-checking only. Always dive with a dive computer or approved tables, within the limits of your training. The App is not a dive computer.

I have forgotten my password

Select Forgot password on the sign-in screen and follow the instructions sent to your email address. If the email does not arrive, please check your spam folder for messages from hello@otterspockets.com.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings › Delete account. Full details, including how to request deletion without the App, are available on the Delete your account page.
